FAQs

  • Can I still buy the product I used to buy in the white box?

No. This range has been swapped out to the newly reformulated ‘Air Baked’ range. We encourage you to give this a try as it is the same great species you love, but now made with 50% less oil for a lighter, crispier fish. Otherwise, our Oven Bake range is still made with our old coatings, so you may wish to try that.
  • What is different about this range compared to the previous white box range?

While the fish is the same specie as before, this product has otherwise been completely reformulated to bring you the best in Air Baked coatings. These products now have less coating (other than fish fingers) as we responded to feedback around the crumb to fish ratio. For every bite, you now get more fish. These crumb coatings have also been specially formulated to deliver the best texture and taste for Air Baking technology.
  • What is 'Air Baking'?

Traditionally, crumbed, frozen products are flash fried in oil before freezing. This helps to set the crumb coating and add oil for taste and texture. We have been able to specially formulate new crumb coatings with no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives, apply 50% less oil than flash frying through a light spray and then pass through an Air Baking oven that applies the heat instead of a fryer.
  • Do I need to cook this product?

Yes. The fish in this product is still raw and frozen. Please follow the cooking instructions on the back of pack.
  • Do I need to cook this in an Air Fryer or can I use my oven?

You don’t need an air fryer to prepare our Air Baked range at home. All products contain oven bake cooking instructions, please make sure you follow the instructions on the back of pack.
  • Why doesn’t Dory have Air Fry instructions? Can I Air Fry it?

Because Dory is quite a succulent fish, the moisture from the fish can make the coating soggy, especially when cooked in the Air Fryer. We recommend cooking our Air Baked Dory in the oven for the best crispy crumb. If you choose to cook our Air Baked Dory an air fryer, please ensure the product is steaming hot and cooked through before serving.
  • In Dory, Whiting and Barramundi, there are some pieces with different shapes? Are they supposed to look like this?

Yes, our fish pieces have not been cut to exactly the same shape. We have three different cuts for the fish that are all slightly different. However, you’re still getting the same amount of fish in each piece.
  • Why is the box lighter than it was before ‘Air Baking’? Am I getting less fish?

We have kept the same amount of fish in the box as before, but because we are making this product with so much less oil, and with less crumb as well, each piece of fish is lighter. Which means that overall, the whole box is lighter. However, you still get the same amount of fish in every piece, and the same number of pieces in a box. So, you can still put together the same number of plates as you could with our old range.
  • Why does the flathead say 50% less oil on the front of pack but 45% less fat on the back of pack? Are these the same thing?

This product has been formulated with 50% less oil than the reference product I&J Original Crumb Hoki 1kg. Due to natural variation in the fat levels of the fish, we had some testing results for fat that meant we weren’t confident to claim 50% less fat and therefore used 45% on pack so that we provide the most accurate information to our consumers.
  • Have the healthy fats been reduced?

It is the fish component that is responsible for healthy omega-3 fatty acids. The focus has been on reducing the fat of the product largely driven by a reduction in oil using new technologies. The healthy fats which are found from the fish remain the same but will experience natural variation.
  • What is the difference between the ‘Air Baked’ and the ‘Oven Bake’ products?

Our Birds Eye Air Baked range is a range of products that we have partially Air Baked in our Birds Eye factory which is an innovative process to allow 50% less oil in the product. Our Oven Bake range instructs shoppers to Oven Bake the Birds Eye fish. Both ranges are suitable for Oven Baking.
  • Is South Atlantic Flathead different to South American Flathead?

No. South Atlantic and South American Flathead are the same. Previously, Birds Eye used ‘South Atlantic’ in the naming as the fish comes from the ocean waters. However, we chose to change to South American to align to the Australian Fish Names Standard.
