Choose products that are lower in salt. Salt contains sodium, which can have negative effects on your health (such as high blood pressure) if you eat too much. The sodium content of a product can be found in the Nutrition Information Panel beside the heading ‘SODIUM’. Find the amount of sodium listed in the column headed ‘PER 100g’. Try to choose foods that contain less than 400 milligrams of sodium per 100 grams.
Foods labelled ‘low salt’ have only 120 milligrams of sodium per 100 grams.
‘Salt reduced’ foods have at least 25% less salt than standard varieties, but may still have a high salt content.
